TEEN VIRTUAL CONSULTATION ( 14 -18 YRS OLD): First 7-Day Aftercare image

The number one rule after your Teen Virtual Consultation is simple: follow the exact starter routine I gave you, and don’t add extra products just because you’re excited. Most skin “setbacks” in the first week come from doing too much, too fast. Here in Hartford, especially around Downtown and the Riverfront near Columbus Boulevard, seasonal shifts can make skin react even faster, so the calm, steady approach matters.

First 24 to 48 hours: patch-test first, then keep it calm

Right after your consult, your job is to protect your skin barrier and avoid surprise reactions. If I recommended any new products, start with a patch test before you put anything new all over your face.

Patch-test method: Apply a small amount behind your ear or on your inner forearm. Leave it alone. Watch for itching, bumps, stinging, or a rash for 24 to 72 hours.

If you’re starting acne actives (benzoyl peroxide or a retinoid)

Don’t stack them on day one. I want you to introduce one active at a time and start every other night. If you’re using a retinoid, a “less is more” amount is usually enough. If you’re using benzoyl peroxide, keep it controlled and avoid sensitive areas like the corners of the nose and mouth.

Keep your first two days basics-only

  • Gentle cleanser, no scrubs.
  • Non-comedogenic moisturizer morning and night.
  • Broad-spectrum SPF every morning, even if it’s cloudy or you’re mostly indoors.
  • Skip picking. Skip harsh toners. Skip exfoliating acids unless I specifically told you to start.

Days 3 to 7: the “don’t overdo it” week that makes results show

This first week is where you build consistency. The routine should fit real life, including early school mornings, after-practice sweat, and busy family schedules. I’d rather see you do a simple routine every day than a complicated routine twice and then quit.

What to avoid this week

  • Mixing multiple strong ingredients at once (example: retinoid + exfoliating acid + benzoyl peroxide). That combo is a fast track to dryness and irritation.
  • Heavy exfoliation, scrubs, or “peel pads” unless I told you exactly when to start.
  • Picking, squeezing, or trying to “dig out” congestion. It tends to leave marks and keeps inflammation going.
  • Falling asleep in makeup. If you wear it, remove it gently and fully.

A quick note for Hartford’s cooler, drier October air

When Hartford flips into cooler weather, skin often starts feeling tight and flaky, even if you’re acne-prone. This is usually when I have teens swap to a slightly richer moisturizer at night and consider running a humidifier at home. Dry skin can still break out. We just handle it gently.

Your routine “anchors”: cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, and one active

If you remember nothing else, remember this: your routine needs anchors. Acne, dryness, and uneven texture all respond better when your basics are solid.

1) Gentle cleanser

Cleansing should leave you clean, not squeaky. If your face feels tight, the cleanser is probably too harsh or you’re cleansing too often.

2) Non-comedogenic moisturizer

Moisturizer is not the enemy of acne. In fact, when you start actives, moisturizer is what helps you stay consistent without peeling and burning.

3) Broad-spectrum SPF every morning

SPF protects results, especially if you’re treating acne marks or uneven tone. Yes, even in fall and winter.

4) One active introduced slowly

Wait 48 to 72 hours between adding new actives. This is how we know what’s working and what’s irritating you.

And a practical tip that helps a lot of teens: take quick photos in the same lighting on day 1, day 4, and day 7. It’s easier to track texture, redness, and breakouts without overthinking it in the mirror.

Makeup, sports practice, and real life: yes, you can still be a teen

Can you wear makeup?

Usually, yes. Keep it light, keep your tools clean, and remove it fully at night. If you’re breaking out around the same spots, it’s often a brush, sponge, or product that needs to be cleaned or swapped.

Can you exercise?

Yes. Just don’t sit in sweaty skin for hours. After practice, rinse and cleanse when you can, then moisturize. If you can’t do the full routine right away, even a quick cleanse and moisturizer is better than nothing.

Riverfront tip: If you’re coming through Downtown Hartford near the Connecticut Science Center or the convention center and you want an in-person follow-up, I can often line it up so it’s quick and easy to fit into your day.

When to message me, and when to schedule that 2 to 4 week check-in

If something feels off, I want you to reach out. I’m known for taking my time, being thorough, and giving real advice for what happens outside of treatment. That doesn’t stop after the consult.

What’s usually normal

  • A little dryness when you start an active.
  • Mild tingling with certain products, especially on sensitive areas.
  • Small fluctuations in breakouts as your routine settles.

What’s not normal, and you should message me

  • Burning that lasts after you rinse.
  • Swelling, hives, or a spreading rash.
  • Cracking, raw patches, or intense peeling.

Most teens do best with a check-in at 2 to 4 weeks so we can track progress and adjust. I serve Hartford and nearby towns, including West Hartford, East Hartford, Wethersfield, Newington, and Manchester. I also keep virtual options open worldwide. If your family is commuting through Union Station, we can plan an in-person visit that feels simple.
